Amy Small-McKinney’s necessary new book, & You Think It Ends takes on difficult subject-matter without manipulating the reader into a series of expected responses. From trauma and loss to love and light, Small-McKinney’s wisdom is manifold and moving. The book’s lyricism, syntax, and form are dazzling. There is a confidence of voice that allows the poet to include a great deal of formal variety without losing focus for one second. When the poems are tight, I’m pleased. And when they’re jagged (in terms of lineation and emotion), I’m pleased too. Small-McKinney speaks to our shared humanity as no one else can.
